Boyhood (And The Comeback of the Ish-Reviews)

Let's begin by asking what we've all been thinking (and by we, I mean me):
How is this the first film to do this?!

Followed by:
How exactly does one tackle and take on an ambitious project?

To be honest, I wasn't very into it when it began. The concept? Yes. Big fan of that, but the beginning felt a little slow and imprecise in a "where is this going?" kind of way. 20 minutes later - after considering I had made a mistake choosing to watch it- I was taken in.

I may be a little biased because I'm a Linklater fan; and once the boy began talking and forming opinions of his own about the world, it was obvious it was a Linklater classic.
He has this way of tackling the ordinary day to day alike and revel in these deep philosophical questions we all ask ourselves about life at one point or another. There is enough and the equal amount of truth/reality and storytelling to keep one entertained and connected to the story and characters.
"You know how everyone's always saying seize the moment? I don't know, I'm kind of thinking it's the other way around, you know, like the moment seizes us."

A lot of things can happen and change in 10 years, that much is clear. But watching a little boy grow up to be a young man, a mother making a living and divorcing twice, a father getting his shit together and settling down later in life, a young girl facing and going through with a choice she made at a young age*, etc... It's as if you come to know these people.

The music, the key events in (now) history and the generational gaps enriched it all.
I remember hearing a song and being taken back to that time in my life; it was like a walk down memory lane for me, too.
*sigh* My, how time flies.

"Everything? What's the point? I mean, I sure as shit don't know. Neither does anybody else, okay? We're all just winging it, you know? The good news is you're feeling stuff. And you've to hold on to that."

It's also refreshing to see a woman age naturally. Kudos to Patricia Arquette, not only for a great performance, but for being and keepin' it real.

And to be shallow and fangirly, shout out to hottie Ethan Hawke as a father. He's got the charismatic and forever youthful character down. Grrr.

It was sort of like watching Jessie and Celine pre- Before Sunrise.
It is also like every actor's dream work scenario, I think. Working with the same people- who become your family- every year for a short period of time.
I'd be up for that, without a question.

And to answer my opening questions:
I'm sure many have thought it, but only the true adventurers follow it through.
You just do. And hope to God that the crew and cast are visionaries like you and don't give up.

Hey, that's kind of like life.

Have you seen it? What did you think about it?

* Apparently Lorelei Linklater regretted taking on the role as she got older, which is pretty apparent in the change of character and enthusiasm. Either way, it worked out.

At the End of the Day it's Just Another Film with a lot of Singing

Happy Holidays, folks!
It's been quiet here on the blogging front, but fret not, for I am still alive and well.
As healthy as an artichoke* for I got to see Les Misérables.
On my own. As is always the case.

If you recall my last post you will remember me confessing not being a Les Mis fan.
And I'm not just jumping on the Les Mis bandwagon because of the film- no. I have truly become a fan.

That being clarified, let's get on with another edition of my Ish-Reviews. **

I had mixed expectations going in, because I was blown away by the 25th Anniversary and expected an equally astounding vocal cast plus spectacular performances. [Of course, I excluded Russell Crowe from these expectations]

On Bullying (& Después de Lucía)

I think we've all been bullied one time (or more) in our lives. I also think we've been guilty of bullying to some degree.

When I turned 12 I moved back to Mexico, after living 6 years in Brazil. I had a hard time adapting and fitting in at my new school- I was a somewhat awkward (pre)pubescent girl.
me
It didn't helpt that my skirt was below my knees, that I wore long socks ie. that I actually wore the school uniform in its entirety (the cool girls wore the boy shirt, not the frilly-pouffy-sleeves girl shirt).
I recall boys, on several occasions, pointing out my hairy legs (I still hadn't begun shaving my legs) and  the lack of a bra (I wore undershirts since there still wasn't anything a bra could hold).
One time I was taken off guard by the lockers- alone and getting school books out, a group of boys walked by, claimed I was in their way and slammed me back into the lockers. This was as nasty as it ever got for me.
I later learned that ignoring them was effective; they found others to bother. *

Then, we all grew up.
Luckily, I was with a group of people I am lucky enough to still call my best friends.
I 'wisened' and toughened up.
Which is not to say hard times were amiss as the years went by.

My last year of high-school, three different students took their own lives.
One was a classmate of mine.
All three were considered to be 'outsiders', 'loners'.

I'm not saying they were bullied into their decision, but they certainly weren't getting encouragement or positive behaviour from others.

Don't forget, we're all fighting hard battles.
Be kind.

Después de Lucía follows Alejandra, a 17-year old girl new to the city after her mother's death.
After a wild night out with her new 'friends', she gains notoriety and becomes an easy target.
What starts out as verbal harassment turns into physical abuse.

For fear of speaking up, many lives are changed.

On a different and lighter note: Tessa Ia's wardrobe was super cute. #want

(images via IMDb )

I left the movie theater feeling all sorts of things; disheartened, impotent, angry, upset and grateful. Grateful because I've never lived such abuse or humiliation.

It's not right to treat each other like shit. It's not right to hurt or violate the rights of another human being. It's not right to keep quiet. It's not right to pretend it's not an issue because it is.

Sometimes, the brave thing to do is to ask for help.
To talk. And talk. And keep talking.
We must never keep silent.
Después de Lucía urges people to talk and open their eyes.

I asked a young girl today on her thoughts on bullying, she said, "Well, that seems to be the way life goes nowadays. You're either the bully or the bullied. It's how people get by."
I understood what she was saying, but I just wanted to scream.

No. No. No.
We're human beings. We should treat each other as such. We should respect. We should love, ourselves and others.
We should be happy.
We should revel in our differences.

I encourage you to.

Here's To The Ladies That Watch Movies (On Their Own)

Guys, I cried watching The Dark Knight Rises. That's not much of a spoiler as it is a testament on how incredibly sensitive and slightly 'damaged' I am. I think I may need to quit on the violent/action movies for a while, they no longer work as escapism... There's enough bad shit going on in the real world as it is.

However, if you ask me to put these empathetic feelings to the test during scene work- my tear ducts dry up immediately. It's like a man unable to perform before getting it on. Fear/Anxiety does that to you.*

Notable movie trailers I had not seen before:
Breaking Dawn Part 2: I gave up on the Twilight Saga after I payed $12 to watch New Moon in theaters. Oh, I had a good laugh but knew I could have put that money to better use.
You guys, I actually read all the books in the series** and the last book was a bit of a "cock-block" for me (is that an appropriate term to use? No offense...)- there was a whole lot of build up for nothing.
Kirsten Stewart looks good as a vampire. End of story and moving on.

Man of Steel: Henry Cavill. Mmm. That's all I have to say about that for now.

Anyway, the (Ish)Review...

Two movies in one week?! I'm on a roll! **

Per usual, I went by my onesy and had a little snack before hand.

Untitled
It had been a while since I enjoyed a nice cup of Mocha. *Sigh* (a couple o') Sweet memories of working at a movie theater...

Let me begin by saying I've never really been a big fan of Spiderman. I've been more of a Batman kind of gal (thanks Michael Keaton!) and to be honest, Tobey Maguire just didn't do it for me.
Cue in Andrew Garfield.

The Truth According to Abe

Part of me thinks it would've been awesome if a former president had been a vampire hunter. But then the other part "wimps out" because the idea of vampires actually existing kind of terrifies me*...

While waiting for the Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D movie release in Asia, the decision was between Abe or Spidey. It being the weekend and Spidey topping the Box Office, I decided to avoid a crowded theater.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter doesn't mess about or disappoint if you're looking for a fun action-packed time. That is, if you aren't skittish when it comes to gruesome creatures and blood.
From the get go, there's rarely a minute of inaction (story-wise too).

Paul Bunyan, anyone?
(Source)

We see the evolution of Abraham from child to avenger to righteous man and overall ass-kicking extraordinaire.
Benjamin Walker was the perfect choice for Abe.  "Common looking"** though he may be, he is charming and intense; he has a look that is so expressive, he exteriorizes what goes on inside him without it being over the top. Plus, those axe-wielding stunts he pulls are awesome.
Funnily enough, I'd noticed a resemblance to Liam Neeson a couple of times and what do you know? He was young Liam Kinsey in Kinsey! I'd be good at casting- maybe I should look into that...

Surprisingly, there was a little romance in the film too. It managed to touch on various events in Lincoln's life without it ever being distracting from the story or removing your attention.
The first 15-20 minutes are an excellent example- enough is shown about his childhood and how he trains to become a vampire hunter sans long-windedness & irrelevant side-stories.

The supporting characters were also great: Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Rufus Sewell and Jimmy Simpson. A real sense of camaraderie permeated within the characters, so much so that the geek in me thought on various occasions, "Hey- I want to be a part of the Lincoln gang too!"

Where be my axe at?
The action sequences can't be omitted. It was obvious they were intended to be seen in 3D, but it still translated well to the "2D eye". As I've already mentioned, the axe stunts are what I found to be the best bit about the fighting and choreographies.
A scene involving a stampede of horses took it all too far, in my opinion. That was the only time I found myself saying, "Aw, c'mon, really?!".

I'm considerably more drawn to read the book now, especially since Seth Grahame-Smith*** also penned the screenplay. Also because the story seemed to work so much better visually- I don't know if I'd like reading pages and pages of battles.

And so there it is, another epic tale of good vs. evil. Of humans vs. vampires. And a history lesson, albeit rebooted.
I think it's safe to say now that John Wilkes Booth was a vampire.

Back at home, I decided to give my best vampiric shot a go...

Of Magic Mirrors, Poisoned Apples and Swords

Yesterday I made my way to the movie theater to see what was playing- lo & behold: Snow White & the Huntsman was about to begin.

Summer blockbusters aren't really my thing, but that never stops me from watching them. [I have yet to watch MIB 3]
I also wanted to draw a comparison with Tarsem's Mirror, Mirror (which I reviewed here) and just let the movie do its job and transport me to faraway lands for a couple of hours.

Oh, it did its job.

Monday: The Start of the Week

I had an interesting and fun weekend.
I travelled up to the North of Thailand to Chiang Mai. It was beautiful, serene and full of wonderful moments where I felt incredibly peaceful.
Full + proper post will definitely be coming this week.

Here's a sneak peak...

Today's Monday consisted of...

A Movie

Something Borrowed

Source: imdb.com via Alison on Pinterest

Lesson: If you're going to watch a movie with/about brides, then this should be the one. (Seriously, someone get it for me on DVD)
I'm a sucker for those I've-always-loved-you-I-should've-let-you-know type of movies.
Overall,  Something Borrowed was cute but it felt like Bride Wars all over again with Kate Hudson playing the same role... (doesn't she always?*). John Krasinski's character especially, made me laugh out loud on various occasions and there was a choreographed dance scene. *Shrugs shoulders* I'd watch it again.
The last 15-20 mins did feel rushed and inconclusive (side-plot wise) - I wonder if the book was any different?
A chick flick rom-com every now and then is necessary, methinks.**

A Book

Ever since I picked up Death on the Nile at the beginning of this year, I've wanted to read another Christie book. You can tell this is one of her later books, as I feel the general pace and story-telling differs from DotN- however, this has not stopped be from being sucked into it.

Do you read mystery/crime novels? Agatha Christie?
If so, what do you recommend?

* Don't get me wrong, I do have a liking for Kate Hudson. She radiates so much energy! And she had M. Bellamy's (of Muse) baby. Cool in my books.
** Did I mention I teared up a couple of times? Yeah. I'm that sap.

Movie Ravings, Once Again

Before I get to the movies, I must apologise for my previous hair rant... I am actually (it turns out) very pleased with the cut! (see attached smug photo) I seem to always have a problem with the styling, post-cut. I'm sensitive that way.
But, moving on...

2 movies in 2 weeks- not too shabby for someone who proclaims decent movies are rare nowadays. That might be so, but that doesn't stop me from guzzling down fizzies (or O.J.) and munching away on instant cavities popcorn.

Titanic 4D: In which I freeze to death just like Jack Dawson

I like this poster better than the 3D one.
In the 24 years of my life, I've only ever had 2 boyfriends. One in highschool (that lasted about 3-4 months), and one a couple of years ago (with an all time record of 2 years). What does this have to do with Titanic, you ask? Not much, really, only that I tend to go out by myself.*

For example, I'm not afraid of going to the movies alone.
And that is exactly what I treated myself to today- a date with myself to watch none other than James Cameron's Titanic. In 3D! (Only the really good boyfriends, which are scarce nowadays, would want to go with you, anyway.)
Pampering knows no boundariess with Hello Kitty involved...

The Fairest One of All?

Apparently I had a lot to say about this movie...

I've been used to having films released in my country (ie. Mexico) months after it's US release, so I was completely unaware that Mirror, Mirror does not open in theaters until next Friday. Crazy!
I don't want to postpone this post until then because then, it just won't ever happen.

How 'bout, in the meantime, you just flip through the pictures and then come back and discuss? Or if spoilers aren't really spoilers for you, then read on.

I had a couple of hours to spare at the mall and decided to pop into cinema and see this.
The story, I felt, was lacking in a solid structure. I was left with more questions than satisfied (or fully distracted) by all the pretty colours. Maybe it was the 1:30 running time that did not allow for a full satisfactory development. A bullied and unconfident Snow White discovers her gutsy side,  falls in love, regains her kingdom, blah, blah, blah... The dialogue? Trying too hard to be funny and tried to move the story along.

Visually, it is lavishly breath-taking: vibrant and colourful. The perfect fairy tale setting, the ideal place for magical happenings. Then again, what else could you expect from Tarsem? Need I mention The Cell and The Fall? His vision is rare, unique and beautiful.
